The GOP establishment is in full “virtue signaling” mode, as they push for assault rifle bans, following the Florida school shooting.
Now, a GOP donor is claiming he will not donate another penny to the RNC unless there’s an assault rifle ban.
In addition, GOP establishment lawmakers are vowing to push for gun control, even if it infringes on our freedoms.
GOP mega-donor and real estate developer Al Hoffman Jr. says he will not write another check to Republicans until that pass an “assault weapons” ban.
The New York Times reports that Hoffman made this announcement via an email that he sent to Jeb Bush and Gov. Rick Scott (R), among others. Hoffman was a major contributor to the George W. Bush presidential campaign. He also donated more than $1 million to a PAC supporting Jeb Bush’s failed presidential campaign bid.
Hoffman wrote, “For how many years now have we been doing this — having these experiences of terrorism, mass killings — and how many years has it been that nothing’s been done? It’s the end of the road for me.” He added, “I will not write another check unless they all support a ban on assault weapons. Enough is enough!”
Hoffman did not define an “assault weapon,” did not say whether it is a set type of firearm or just any rifle that has the cosmetic features banned by Democrats from 1994-2004. It must be noted that the Democrat ban did not ban the rifles, only the cosmetic features. Is that what Hoffman has in mind?
[…..]On Saturday’s “MSNBC Live,” Rep. Francis Rooney (R-FL) stated that “some freedoms are going to have to be given up” to ensure unstable people don’t get weapons and that he will agree to act on gun control, but “not necessarily for normal people.” He also expressed uncertainty as to whether people should be allowed to own AR-15s and argued for making schools harder targets.
Rooney said, “Well, we are one of the most open societies in the world. I think that each one of these heinous crimes raises the bar and makes us — compels that we, as a nation, rethink where we are on our open society versus what are we willing to do in restricting freedom to make sure that we’re safe and secure. Very unstable situation here, when someone like a person of this demonstrated mental illness, at the local level and even to the FBI, could get ahold of an assault weapon, we’ve got to think about that.”
He added, “I think this raises the bar significantly, that a person of this demonstrated debility could get ahold an assault weapon, that so many warning signs at the — at all levels of government would go unanswered, and that he could just walk right into another soft target school. We’ve got to harden up these schools. Too many schools have been plagued.”
