Former FBI Director James Comey has declared that there is an “anti-Trump awakening” happening in America.
Comey’s comments come as the economy hits historic highs with low unemployment and growing wages.
Former FBI Director James Comey said America is in the process of an “awakening” under the Trump presidency that will prompt voters to force a course correction for the country.
In an op-ed for the New York Times published on Election Day, Comey, a former Republican who this year has urged people to vote Democrat, wrote that America will recover from the Trump presidency, and said the country will again be able to make “progress” again.
“History shows us that with so much progress and change, a spasm of negativity and backlash was inevitable,” he said, citing the election of that nation’s first black president and a woman winning the popular vote in the 2016 presidential election.
“We can’t fully control the natural rhythms of human history. But what we can control is how long this period lasts before the line turns up again,” he wrote.
Comey said the “core values” of the “middle” will guide the country again, but said it’s up to them to uphold those values “so that we shorten the period before we resume our upward march.”
Comey has frequently rebuked President Trump since his abrupt firing in May 2017. In July, after Trump declined to back the U.S. intelligence community’s conclusion that Russia meddled in the 2016 election, Comey called on “patriots” to stand up to the president.
