German Soccer Team Takes a Knee in ‘Solidarity’ With the NFL

Berlin’s major soccer team took a knee at their game on Saturday, to express solidarity with NFL players protesting “police brutality” and “social injustice” by kneeling for America’s national anthem.

Seriously Germany, just stay out of this!

From The Daily Wire

Although Germany’s soccer teams don’t listen to The Star-Spangled Banner before their games — of course — Hertha’s coach and its starting lineup knelt on the field before kickoff. Coaches and team administrators joined the demonstration, kneeling on the sidelines.

Since German soccer fans aren’t always familiar with what’s happening on this side of the pond, the announcers had to explain to the crowd, and the viewers at home, that Hertha was showing respect for NFL kneelers, and protesting racism inside Germany.

“Berlin is colorful,” announcers said. “Hertha BSC stands for diversity and against violence. For this reason, we are joining forces with the protest of our fellow American athletes to take a stand against discrimination.”

The club reiterated their political stand on Twitter. “Hertha BSC stands for tolerance and responsibility! For a tolerant Berlin and an open-minded world, now and forevermore!” the team’s official Twitter account posted.

The demonstration marked the first time the #TakeAKnee protest has crossed the pond — at least to a foreign team. Several members of the Baltimore Ravens knelt before an NFL game played in London (the team then stood for God Save The Queen, a move that didn’t seem particularly well thought-out).
